Lethal beauty: a family friend alternative.

April 22nd, 2008 by Heather Dyer

Consider the lilies of the field. Never did King Solomon dress in such a lovely robe.

It’s no secret that a lily may be one of the most stunning and intriguing of all natural phenomenons. By no effort of its own, it flaunts colorful majesty. Whether in an elegant home or on the side of the highway growing wild, a flower never spares its beauty according to its audience.

April arrives after we’ve been cooped up for long solemn cold months and we begin to anticipate spring. Dead and dormant trees, bulbs, and plant life begin to wake after a long winter nap bringing fresh blooms and the promise of sunshine. The lily is often seen as the trademark flower of springtime.

How could something so lovely be poisonous?

Beyond the beauty of this curious and stunning flower, the things we know to be true about lilies are that they are poisonous from stem to bloom. If eaten by a small child or household pet, kidney failure or death could ensue. “Unfortunately, all parts of the lily plant are considered toxic and consuming even small amounts can be life threatening.” Within only a few hours of ingestion of the lily plant, the victim may vomit, become lethargic, or develop a lack of appetite. These signs continue and worsen as kidney damage progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment by a professional, the victim may develop kidney failure in 36 to 72 hours. Small children must be taught never to eat or touch the blooms of a flower, and all plants must be kept out of reach of small animals such as cats.

It is for such reasons that parents these days have begun decorating for spring with silk lilies. With extremely life-like blooms and realistic stems and leaves, it’s hard to tell a silk flower arrangement from a live one, but the danger to children and household pets is fully eliminated.
